Weekly advance
The Australian dollar strengthened sharply against the US dollar, with AUD/USD rising more than 0.82% on Friday and over 1.20% for the week. The pair traded at 0.7170 after recovering from the 0.7067 area, highlighting a decisive rebound into the weekly close.
The advance followed a broader decline in the US dollar after the US Treasury Department announced a bond buyback focused on the long end of the yield curve. Dollar weakness provided the main backdrop for the currency pair’s gains, allowing the Australian dollar to extend its recovery.
Breakout supports bullish momentum
The move has been characterized as a breakout, reinforcing the immediate bullish direction for AUD/USD. Holding above the rebound area and sustaining the push toward 0.7170 leaves buyers in control of the near-term price action.
The year-to-date high is now the main upside objective identified for bulls. However, the limited information available does not establish a specific level for that high or confirm whether the pair can maintain its recent pace of appreciation.
Dollar remains the key driver
The latest rally was closely linked to the US currency’s response to the Treasury announcement. As a result, the durability of the AUD/USD breakout remains sensitive to whether the dollar’s decline continues or begins to reverse.
For now, the combination of a strong Friday performance, a weekly gain exceeding 1.20%, and a rebound of more than one cent from 0.7067 to around 0.7170 supports a bullish near-term reading. A renewed US dollar recovery, however, could challenge the pair’s attempt to extend toward its year-to-date peak.
